Forestcarve

Key: C
Length:  152cm
Top diameter:  7cm
Bottom Diameter:  16cm
No record was kept of how long it took to carve this didge. Countless hours were spent depicting a forest scene complete with birds, lizards, eucalyptus leaves and ground creeper. A possum even lurks in the camopy. Due to the unique properties of Mallee Eucalyptus timber the background consists of the naturally much darker inner wood of the log. No stain was used. This didge has a clear note, is a versatile player with effortless volume change, a great meditation tool.

Trunk

Key:  C
Length:  145cm
Top diameter:  6cm
Bottom:  13 x 10cm
This didge instantly reminded me of an elephant's trunk. The volume is appropriate; it just sounds a lot better. The natural bark-free finish was so appealing that I couldn't alter it. This didge takes very little effort to play.

Rooted

Key: E
Length:  119cm
Top diameter:  6cm
Bottom:  16 x 35cm
For Australians this name has a special connotation, but the literal interpretation is more than adequate to describe this didge, with 35cm of root burl creating a most unusual bell. This is a short and fast player. Great to pick up and have some fun with, it lacks the versatility of more expensive didges.

Barenatural

Key: D
Length: 130cm
Top diameter: 6.5cm
Bottom diameter: 11cm
This no nonsense didge was made for playing.  The wood has been exposed leaving the natural bark over the bell for a neat, attractive and durable instrument.  A nice clear note with plenty of volume and an easy overtone make this didge a pleasure to play.

Catfish

Key: D
Length: 126cm
Top diameter: 5.5cm
Bottom diameter: 9.5 X 8cm
This is a traditional didge from the Northern parts of Australia.  More of a showpiece than a playing didge, this instrument still produces a reasonable note.  Unfortunately little is known of its precise origin.  This log features four catfish in a traditional cross-hatching painting style unique to Northern Australia using natural ochre paint.

Painted forest

Key: C#

Top Diameter: 6cm
Bottom Diameter: 12cm
This all round nice player is easy to play.  It features a good clear easy drone note, and an easy overtone.  Fine dot painting depicts a eucalyptus forest canopy.  The natural bark has been left intact to create the transition from canopy to ground where a ground cover plant has also been depicted at the bottom of the didge.

Thunderstick

Key: D
Length: 136cm
Top diameter: 5cm
Bottom diameter: 16 X 13cm
This name says it all.  This light didge is so satisfying to play that I am reluctant to let it go.  It can be played very fast of as slow as desired.  With a very “punchy” feel, this instrument is great for fast percussive rhythms.  Effortless overtones enhance this.    Vocal noises also come through with ease.  When mixed with its high reed or drone note there are some interesting effects to be heard.  Artwork includes three “hidden” eucalyptus leaves painted along the top half of this didge, hidden because they are not obvious at first glance.  Twine binding has been placed where the instrument is most often held.

Woodgrain (Sorry, this one is SOLD)

Key:C#
Length : 143cm
Top Diameter: 6cm
Bottom diameter: 38 X 20cm
This is a very loud didge with a massive bell.  It plays with ease and despite its volume, is very clear.  Windows rattle when this one is played. The woodgrain on this instrument is so crazy that it is hard to imagine how the tree grew so straight.  Look for long enough and you will see all sorts of faces and shapes.  It’s a bit like cloud gazing.  A small ring of dot painting encircles the top of the bell depicting the wood grains natural randomness.

Bent

Key : C#
Length: 137cm
Top diameter: 5.5cm
Bottom diameter: 7cm
This light stick is a great beginner’s didge but would also suit a more advanced player.  The key of C# is arguably the easiest to play while maintaining the versatility and interesting sounds of advanced playing.  This didge boasts a nice clear bright sound.
Its unusual shape is ideal for playing around corners.  For such a bent didge, this one is a surprisingly all-round honest didge.

Shaker

Key : G
Length: 143cm
Top diameter: 5cm
Bottom diameter: 35 X 20cm
With thin walls, this is a very light didge for its size. When I first played this didge, I expected a low thundering thumper of an instrument. What I got shocked me. It turns out to be a very loud and high G. The windows shake and the floorboards vibrate. Play for long enough and I am sure the neighbours would make the front door shake. Once it gets going, this is a very satisfying didge to play. More suited to advanced playing, this didge is great for some fast rhythms. The bark has been maintained on the bottom two thirds of this log while the top features swirling dot art depicting the natural randomness of nature. The enormous bell makes this a rare free standing instrument.
